A proud little pregnancy moment

Jan 07

I’ve written time and again how much I love CrossFit. You are probably tired of reading about it, but sorry folks, it’s here to stay.

Over my almost year of this, I have gone to a couple competitions to take pictures, and photographed others that I work out with. A friend on Facebook asked where are the pictures of me and my muscles…yeah, I’m more of a behind-the-camera kind of gal.

Yesterday, though, we did a workout that included clean and jerks. Now some people aren’t fans of this movement, but I actually like it. In addition to deadlifts, these might be my favorite. I just really like pulling weight off the ground for some reason, and I feel steadier doing a jerk rather than a snatch. Yes, these are all lifting terms…promise. Yesterday’s workout consisted of four rounds of 12 strict pull-ups, 27 GHD and 12 clean and jerks at 110 pounds. I scaled to pull-ups with a band (or two…or three), ABMAT sit-ups and only doing 65 pounds for my C&Js. The past couple weeks I’ve been biting at the bit to add more weight, but since I’m at the end of this pregnancy, I’m keeping things light.

I ended up with a pretty good time even though I was sweating like a pig, and when we were done I thought to myself, “I just did that at 37 weeks pregnant.” A little bit of pride swelled up inside me, then, and I had a second though, “I want proof of me doing this at 37 weeks pregnant.” So I got a friend to take a couple videos of me doing some clean and jerks. From those, I pulled some photos.

Now my butt does need to get lower in that first position and I need to take the roundness out of my shoulders, but you try bending over with a big ol’ belly and pregnancy boobs. Go ahead…try it.

So yeah, I did that. It might have only been 65 pounds, but I lifted that over my head more than 50 times (warm-up, WOD and for the pictures).

*please remember this was after the WOD, so me being red-faced is completely normal. I get hot even when not pregnant.

  1. Rockin’ work yesterday Bec! You’ll be able to tell the new baby one day that it was strong before it ever exited the womb!

The cameraman that took those pics sure seems a natural as well… ;-)

  2. Nice work! I love seeing ladies do Crossfit while pregnant, I wish I had discovered Crossfit back when I was having my babies.

I have question about the clean, tho — it is a movement where the bar is supposed to travel close to the body and I’m wondering how you handle that with all that baby in the way?

Congrats on your fit pregnancy — you and your baby will both be healthier for it!

Yes, the clean is supposed to travel close to my body, and that is one reason I am not using a lot of weight. My form is probably a little off because the bar has to travel out a bit more, and I really only notice it in the chest area. When I roll my elbows down, I noticed that the bar drifts. If I were doing this with a really heavy weight, I think it would be a bigger problem.

I wish I had discovered Crossfit before as well, but I don’t know that I would have stuck with it back then. Thanks for the comment!

Sometimes cursing is warranted. This would be one of those so-called times. You’re a bad ass. I expect more pictures, bad ass.

  7. Love, love, love it! Stop apologizing, though, for form or weight choices. You’re freakin’ making a person and doing Crossfit…even the elite men can’t do that! ;)
